Kutztown Music Department to Honor Richard Wells at Alumni Concert

September 24, 2013

KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Kutztown University Music Department will dedicate the Richard Wells rehearsal hall on Sept. 28 at 7:30 p.m. during the 40th anniversary of the Graduate Organization of Bands (GOBS) concert. This event marks the 40th anniversary of the Graduate Organization of Bands, an organization that supports current Kutztown University music groups and is run by KU alumni committed to music and giving back to the university.

Joining the Alumni Jazz Band are groups from the university that Wells once directed. The Kutztown University Concert Band will be playing two dedicatory marches, one by John Phillip Sousa and another by John Higgins. The Jazz Ensemble will play two jazz standards and the Kutztown University Marching Unit will perform their 2013 field show as well as some stand tunes.

Richard G. Wells began his career in the Kutztown area school district before moving to the Owen J. Roberts School District.  He taught at Kutztown University from 1968 until his retirement in 1997.  Wells continues to be active as a member of the GOBS. He also directs the Kutztown University Alumni Jazz Band, which will be performing "Big Swing Face," and a medley of "Somewhere / Didn't We".

Wells, who is from Knauertown, Pa., earned his bachelor's degree in music education from West Chester University and his master's degree in music education from Columbia University. He is also a cofounder of Music in the Parks, Festivals of Music, and World Travel Inc.

Schaeffer Auditorium is located on Schaeffer Ln. Kutztown, PA 19530. The concert is free and open to the public.
