KU Jazz Ensemble and University Choir to Offer Gala Concert
September 20, 2013
KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Kutztown University Jazz Ensemble I will perform the original 1924 orchestration of "Rhapsody in Blue," by George Gershwin on Monday, Sept. 30, at 7:30 p.m. in Schaeffer Auditorium. Joining the Jazz Ensemble will be the University Choir, which will be performing selections from "Magnificat," by Jonathan Willcocks. This Department of Music Gala Concert celebrating the opening of the renovated and expanded Schaeffer Auditorium is free and open to the public.
"Rhapsody in Blue" was premiered by the Paul Whiteman Jazz Orchestra with George Gershwin as the piano soloist in 1924 and recorded by the composer and the Whiteman Orchestra in 1926. Unlike the later orchestrations for large symphony orchestra, this work was written for the jazz orchestra augmented with violins, banjo, French horns, and concert percussion. Dr. Kevin Kjos will direct KU Jazz Ensemble I, featuring pianist and Kutztown University Department of Music faculty member Dr. Daniel Immel. The ensemble is also joined by special guest clarinetist Marybeth Kern '09.
The Jazz Ensemble I will also perform two additional selections by Gershwin featuring senior vocalist Mary McCormick.
The Kutztown University Choir, directed by Professor Don Schade, will perform selections from Jonathan Willcocks' "Magnificat," which is written for full chorus, soprano solo, brass ensemble, organ, and percussion. The soprano solo will be performed by a senior vocal music major Mary McCormick. They will be joined by the Berks Youth Chorus Mastersingers.
Schaeffer Auditorium is located at Kutztown Rd. and Schaeffer Ln. on the campus of Kutztown University. For further information visit www.kutztown.edu.
