Oct. 22, 2012

KUTZTOWN, Pa - Kutztown University's Latino Business Resource Center (LRBC) will receive a $50,000 contribution from National Penn Bank on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at a reception beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the Berks County Community Foundation building, the site of the LBRC's bilingual business courses. (Check presentation and comments begin at 5:15 p.m.) Sharon McMichael, Community Reinvestment Act Officer, National Penn, and Lewis Cyr, president of National Penn Bank's Central Region, will present the check.

The Latino business resource center provides several services to help local Latino citizens create and run their own businesses. Latino entrepreneurs working with the LBRC are provided with business consulting, education and research and business tools in a bilingual format to help them develop thriving businesses. By working closely with Latino and Latino-serving organizations, as well as regional economic development organizations, the Latino business resource center has been able to make a significant impact in the Latino business community and earned the President's Award at the 27th Annual United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce National Convention and Business Expo.

The LBRC's eight week venture planning course, "Programa de negocios para el Éxito de Empresarios Latinos" (Entrepreneurial Program for Latino Business Success), teaches students how to create a business plan, start a business, increase profits, manage business finances and improve credit. Furthermore, participants receive free business consulting, funding opportunities and a certificate upon graduation. Currently, 24 workshop attendees will have the opportunity to present their business ideas to a panel of business pitch judges from the private sector for feedback on the proposals with the potential to win cash awards for the top three pitches that are made.
