Men's Rugby Team fifth at 7s College National Championships

The Kutztown University men's rugby team defeated Navy, 38-12, in the Plate Final to take fifth place at the 2012 USA Rugby Collegiate 7's National Championships on Saturday at College Station, Texas.

The Golden Bears lit up the scoreboard early and often beginning with a score by standout Tim Acker. KU went on to open up a 26-0 lead at halftime.

The Midshipmen finally got on the scoreboard with 6:13 remaining in the second half to close the gap to 26-7. Kutztown responded with a pair of long scores to put the game out of reach.

Kutztown finished 4-2 for the tournament, going 2-1 each day. The Golden Bears had big wins over Virginia and Texas on Friday, and a close loss to Central Washington on Friday to earn a top eight seed and a chance to compete for the national title Saturday. A loss to Arkansas State Saturday morning sent KU to the plate bracket, where they bounced back by avenging the loss to Central Washington and cruising to victory in the final.

College Station, Texas - Kutztown lost to Arkansas State, 31-12, in the quarterfinals.  KU plays Central Washington in a fifth place match Saturday afternoon.

Update Nov. 30, 2012 7:30 p.m.

College Station, Texas - In the final game of pool play, the Kutztown Rugby team lost to Central Washington, 26-17, at the Collegiate 7s National Championship Friday evening.  With a +59 point differential, the Golden Bears are poised for a spot in the quarterfinals Saturday. 

Update Nov. 30, 2012 4:25 p.m.

College Station, Texas - The Kutztown men's rugby team defeated Texas, 28-10, to improve to 2-0 in pool play on Friday. The Golden Bears will face Central Washington at 6:20 p.m. EST in a battle of 2-0 teams. It will be the final game before seeding for Saturday. Central Washington has yet to allow a point in the tournament, winning over Texas, 19-0, and Virginia, 36-0.

Update: Nov. 30, 2012 12:15 p.m.

College Station, Texas - The Kutztown University men's rugby team shutout Virginia 50-0 in the opener of Pool C play at the 2012 USA Rugby Men's College Sevens National Championships Friday morning. The Golden Bears will continue pool play at 3 p.m. against Texas, which fell to Central Washington, 19-0 this morning.

KUTZTOWN, PA - The Kutztown University men's rugby team will participate in the  2012 Collegiate Rugby 7's National Championship this Friday and Saturday at College Station, Texas.  The Golden Bears, one of 24-teams to qualify, participated in the inaugural tournament last year, advancing to the semi-finals.  The Golden Bears will play the other three teams from their bracket on Friday. Game times are as follows:

11:20 a.m. EST - Kutztown vs. Virginia

3 p.m. EST - Kutztown vs. Texas

6:20 p.m. EST - Kutztown vs. Central Washington
