Kutztown University to Present Women and Disability Panel
March 4, 2014
KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Kutztown University will present a Women and Disability Panel on Tuesday, March 11 at 3 p.m. in Alumni Auditorium in the McFarland Student Union Building, room 183. Women leaders with disabilities will discuss struggles with access, barriers to employment and education, and how they worked to overcome these roadblocks. A question and answer session will follow.
The panel includes Betsy Valnes, founding executive director of the National Youth Leadership Network (NYLN) and board of directors member for the US International Council on Disability and the World Disability Union; Josie Badger, a youth coordinator at the Parent Education and Advocacy Leadership Center, author of "Launching into Adulthood," and Ms. Wheelchair America 2012; and Kathryn Buschan, a Kutztown University professor with research interests in life skills curriculum design for high school students with disabilities.
Staci Forrest, a KU Special Education major and Women's & Gender Studies minor, will moderate the panel. "This is both a great honor and accomplishment," she said. "Too often the stories of women with disabilities are not told or even considered in mainstream media or academia. It's great to play a role in making sure the voices of women with disabilities are heard." Forrest is the curriculum development specialist at the NYLN and president of the Kutztown University chapter of the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance.
This program is sponsored by the KU Commission on the Status of Women, Disability Services, Multicultural Services, Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, Office of the President, Office of the Provost, Women's Center and Women's & Gender Studies.
