Jazz Ensemble I is no stranger to performing with talented musicians. In 2011, they played alongside the jazz group Bug at the Lawrence Arts Center. They also presented an evening of jazz with the KU Wind Ensemble this past February, where they played pieces such as Cole Porter's "I Love You" and "Fandango," which was co-composed by KU student James Henry and associate professor of trumpet Steve Leisring.
Kurt Elling is among the world's foremost jazz vocalists and has won every DownBeat Critics Poll for the last 12 years. Elling's rich baritone spans four octaves and features both astonishing technical mastery and emotional depth. His command of rhythm, texture, phrasing, and dynamics is more like a virtuoso jazz instrumental than a vocalist.
