KU Presents! a Visual and Musical Spectacle
March 14, 2012
KUTZTOWN, PA - "A breathless journey through an ever-changing emotional landscape" (NY Daily News) comes to KU Presents! on Thursday, March 29 at 7:30 p.m. in Ursa Minor's Café with the Pennsylvania sonic hooligans, Squonk Opera. The program "Mayhem & Majesty," is their interpretation of the question: what could music look like? Using their own compositions they use song to evoke different atmospheres and dynamics, which are made vivid through mesmerizing projections and constantly transforming scenery. "Mayhem and Majesty" goes on a journey from the depths of rhythmic minimalism to the heights of gypsy rock raucous delight with their award-winning multimedia canvas.
Recently highlighted on "America's Got Talent," Squonk Opera has been seen live by hundreds of thousands of people from around the world. With reviews like "insane majesty" from The Scotsman, and "...surreal and poetic" from USA Today, they have been compared with the spectacle of Cirque du Soleil and the Blue Man Group. "[They are] a surreal dreamscape, alternately sweet, silly, satiric and cool" - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
"Mayhem and Majesty" will be as much an installation piece within the Student Union setting of Ursa Minor's café, as a wondrous sonic and visual experience. While at Kutztown University, Squonk Opera's Artistic Directors Jackie and Steve will hold a free lecture/demonstration that will be open to the public, students and faculty of Digital Arts, Electronic media, Communication Design, Art, Film, Music and Theater on "Integrating Visual Media as Performance." Jackie and Steve will discuss the creation of their original shows with new real time visually based performance forms, and show selections of video excerpts. They will demonstrate the process where media, staging and design are all developed concurrently to generate shows using Squonk Opera and other non-verbal theater companies
