KUTZTOWN, PA - Kutztown University's Patrick Donmoyer, researcher for the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University, decoded a barn blessing written more than 100 years ago for the Historical Society of Berks County. Donmoyer's findings were the focus of an article in the Reading Eagle on March 18, 2012.
"Barn blessings, or charms, were quite common in Berks County and flourished into the early 20th century," said Donmoyer, a researcher at the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University. "They were meant to dispel evil by invoking religious protection."
