Azerbaijani KU Student Hosts Traditional Middle Eastern "Nowruz" Festival

March 22, 2012

KUTZTOWN, Pa - Azerbaijani national and Kutztown University student Ismail Huseynovwill lead the Nowruz Festival and Azerbaijani Exhibition of photos and artifacts Friday, March 23, 2-4:30 p.m. in the Multicultural Center at KU. This is the first time Nowruz and Azerbaijan Day has been celebrated at KU. The event is free and open to the public.

Huseynov, 17, is a freshman studying public administration at KU, living on campus. "I was in America when I was 15-years old - I stayed with an American family in Washington D.C. for four months while I learned English," he said. "I also know Russian, Turkish and, of course, I know Azeri." Huseynov graduated from his Azerbaijani-Turkish high school at 16-years old.

A resident of the capitol of Azerbaijan, Baku, hopes to bring some of the traditional music and dance of his country to the campus and students of Kutztown University.

"Nowruz is about the celebration of spring; it recognizes the four elements - fire, water, earth and wind. We'll have traditional Azeri dancing, traditional Nowruz food and tea. I know my KU classmates will really enjoy spending time. I want to show the students my country through this festival," Huseynov explained.

"I would really like my classmates, students at KU to better understand my country - Azerbaijan is so beautiful. Azerbaijan is as old as the Roman Empire - more than 2,000 years old. Hardly anyone knows that - I'd like my friends to know more about where I live," Huseynov said.

The event is sponsored by the Azerbaijan America Alliance, a non-profit organization providing information broadly about the people, culture, society, industry, history and current events of the Azeri people. KU faculty and staffers, along with guests and friends from Washington D.C., State College, Virginia and friends and representatives from the Azerbaijan America Alliance are expected to attend.
