GOLDEN BEAR MEN'S RUGBY WINS AMERICAN COLLEGIATE RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP
Greensboro, S.C. - Kutztown University men's rugby won the inaugural Division I American Collegiate Rugby Championship Saturday afternoon beating Penn State 33-18 in Greensboro, SC. The Golden Bears beat West Virginia and Bowling Green Universities to advance to the championship round. Penn State eliminated Clemson and Middlebury (VT).
Penn State got on the board first with a 3-point penalty kick which was quickly followed by a Michael Lawrenson (South Africa) KU try and conversion making the score 7-3. Bruce Dolan (Hatboro, Pa.) followed up with a second KU try making it 12-3.
The Nittany Lions took their only lead of the game scoring two tries in five minutes, making it 13-12 PSU. Three minutes later Matt Frederick (Coplay, Pa.) scored to give KU a 17-13 lead before halftime.
The second half was all Golden Bears and featured the kicking of Niku Kruger (Pretoria, South Africa) who would add 11 points to the KU score with three penalty kicks and one conversion. Trent Hensely (Washington D.C.) scored the only try of the half after a penalty by Penn State's Dominic DeFalco gave KU a power play advantage.
Penn State would get a penalty try in the last seconds of the game but missed the conversion making it 33-18.
This was the second victory for KU over the Nittany Lions this season. Kutztown took a 27-26 win over Penn State during a regular season game Oct. 12.
