Dr. James E. Mackin Appointed Acting Provost

KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Kutztown University Acting President Dr. Carlos Vargas-Aburto has appointed Dr. James E. Mackin as acting provost effective August 18. Mackin will take over for Vargas who became acting president July 1 with the departure of Dr. F. Javier Cevallos. Mackin will remain acting provost until a permanent university president is appointed.
As chief academic officer he will be responsible for oversight of academic and student affairs at the university.
Mackin comes to KU from Abu Dhabi University, United Arab Emirates, where he was provost from 2009-2013. Prior to that he served as provost of Bloomsburg University from 2005 - 2009.
"I am excited to welcome Jim to KU next week," Vargas said. "His depth of experience and familiarity with higher education in Pennsylvania will be a great asset to Kutztown during this transition period as we conduct a search for our next president."
While at Abu Dhabi, Mackin oversaw the establishment of 13 new undergraduate programs and eight new graduate programs including a doctorate in business administration and an executive MBA. He led the then nine-year-old university to be one of the top ten universities in the Arab world.
Mackin also participated in the development of the university's communication, community engagement and enrollment management plans.
At Bloomsburg he oversaw the development of two new undergraduate programs and three new graduate programs. He was involved in the creation of an enrollment and retention plan which led to substantial increases in new student diversity and enrollment.
Mackin holds both a bachelor's and a master's degrees in oceanography from the University of Michigan and a doctorate in geophysical sciences from the University of Chicago.
A resident of New Tripoli, Pa., Mackin owns and operates the Allentown KOA Campground.
