In the News: Phill Reed

August 7, 2012

KUTZTOWN, PA - Dr. Phill Reed, assistant professor of physics and astronomy at Kutztown University, talks about a local Lancaster company's contribution to the Mars mission.  Weaver Industries, located in Denver, Lancaster County, helped to create the heat shield for the spacecraft carrying the Curiosity rover.

"A heat shield acts as a buffer between the spacecraft's instruments and the atmosphere," Reed says, adding that this spacecraft is the largest thing to have ever landed on Mars.
