US Army Field Band Trombone Trio to Offer Masterclass, Concert

KUTZTOWN, Pa. - A trio of trombone players from the U.S. Army Field Band will present a masterclass Thursday, May 9 at 4 p.m. in the Georgian Room of Old Main. Sergeant Major Mark Bowling and Staff Sergeants Carmen Russo and Wesley Ballenger III will offer lessons on rehearsal and performance techniques.
The three will be featured in a trombone choir concert that evening at 7:30 p.m. also in the Georgian Room. The Kutztown University and community trombone choirs will open the concert.
The masterclass and concert are both free and open to the public.
SGM Bowling is a soloist and brass group leader with the U.S. Army Field Band as well as a private teacher and clinician. He holds a master's degree in music from Arizona State University and a bachelor's degree in theory and composition from Mansfield University of Pennsylvania.
SSG Russo studied with Per Brevig at the Aspen School of Music and later with Don Kneeburg. He holds a bachelor's degree in music performance from the University of South Florida. He has performed with the Florida Orchestra, Florida West Coast Symphony, the Symphony of Southwest Florida, Sarasota Opera, Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and for the Holland America and Carnival Cruise Lines. SSG Russo was also selected to play with the Grandlink World opening festival band in Qingdao, China, in addition to several traveling off-Broadway shows including The Lion King, Cinderella, 42nd St, the Producers, Chicago and Showboat.
SSG Ballenger holds a bachelor's degree from Indiana University. He has studied with M. Dee Stewart, Peter Ellefson and Ian Bousfield. SSG Ballenger has performed as bass trombonist with the Richmond Symphony and Columbus (Indiana) Philharmonic.
