GOLDEN BEAR ATHLETICS

Kutztown University head baseball coach Chris Blum reached another career milestone on Thursday. Kutztown notched a doubleheader sweep of Virginia State, including a no-hitter in the finale, to give the 12th-year skipper his 400th career win at the helm of the Golden Bears.  Blum is the ninth coach in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) history to win 400 career games. Now in his 12th season at KU, Blum is the second-quickest PSAC coach to 400 wins, one year behind Mansfield's Harry Hilson.

Twelve members of the Kutztown University field hockey team were recognized by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) on Wednesday afternoon as selections to the 2013 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division II National Academic Squad.  Kutztown was also honored with a Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division II National Academic Team Award as a program with a team GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Of the 12 Golden Bears honored, all three seniors were included for the fourth time of their careers. Jamie Koenig, Erin Reynolds, and Elly Skinner have now earned academic honors in each of their four years in the Maroon and Gold.  Along with the senior trio, nine other student-athletes were named to the squad, ranging from freshmen to juniors. Included were Anna Behm, Analyse Gaspich, Samantha Jacobson, Liz Mikitish, Kayla Ruth, Rachael Sanders, Julia Snyder, Jessica Strohecker and Megan Tiwold.

Kutztown improved by three overall wins in 2013 and was in playoff contention until the final game of the season. It had two players earn all-conference recognition, and Reynolds earned her second career All-America honor.
