IEP Level and Schedule Information
The Intensive English Program has three levels. When you arrive at Kutztown, you will take a placement test and be put into one of our three levels. Our levels offer English study at beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels for people who would like to study at the university level and for people who would like to improve their English language skills. Full-time and part-time study options are available.
Level I builds on basic language abilities by increasing fluency and academic competence to begin university classes and transition to Level 2. Students will take six classes. Sample classes include: Introduction to Academic Reading and Writing, Introduction to Oral Communication, Grammar 1, Academic Study Skills, and elective options, such as College Culture and Communication. During this level, students must successfully complete 21 ESL credit hours.
Level II combines English language classes with up to three credits of a University class. This intermediate level offers English language support while allowing students to begin university studies. Students will take seven classes. Sample classes include: Intermediate Reading and Writing 2, Academic Writing 2, Oral Communication 2, Grammar 2, Advanced Academic Study Skills, and elective options, such as College Culture and Communication. During this level, students will be required to complete 21 ESL credit hours with the possibility of taking one KU course.
Level III combines upper level English language classes with up to six credits of University classes. This combination of IEP and university classes provides the English language support and confidence students need to succeed as a full-time student. During this level, students must complete a minimum of 18 ESL credit hours plus one or two KU courses. Sample classes include: Advanced Reading and Vocabulary 3, Advanced Academic Writing 3, Advanced Oral Communication 3, and Assessment Portfolio Class.
