M.L.S. with Extension of Certification

The MLS with extension of certification is designed for students who already hold a teaching certificate and want to extend it to include K-12 library science certification.

Courses in Specialization (27 credits)

LIB 509 Foundations of Library and Information Services
LIB 511 Reference and Information Services in Library Settings
LIB 513 Organizing, Cataloging and Classifying Materials
LIB 515 Collection Development
ITC 525 Computers in Libraries
LIB 526 Technologies in Libraries
LIB 555 School Library Administration
LIB 575 Teaching Function of the School Library
LIB 585 Children and Young Adult Literature

Fieldwork (3 credits)

LIB 590: Fieldwork: School Library (culminating course) or an elective if already in a library
PRAXIS II (at end of program) 0511, 0311

The above listed courses meet the requirements of the Pennsylvania Department of Education to extend certification from another area to include K-12 Library Science.

To obtain an MLS, the student must complete the above AND Two additional courses: (6 credits)

LIB 500 Methods of Research
LIB/ITC Graduate Elective

 


 

Prior to application for extension of your PA Teaching Certificate to include Library Science, you must:

  1. Successfully complete all course work.
  2. Take and pass Library Science Specialization portion of the PRAXIS Tests  (Professional Assessments for Beginning Teachers).
  3. Send PRAXIS Test scores to KU and the PA Department of Education.

Our certification program has been reviewed and approved by the American Association of School Librarians' program reviewers; program recognition is tied to NCATE accreditation.
