Organization Status Change Process

Student organizations registered at KU each have a specific status that grants various levels of privilege to the organization and its members.  The three status levels are Registered, Maroon and Gold.  After 15 academic weeks at that status, the organization may apply for the next status level.  Gold is the highest status level, giving the highest level of privilege.  Gold status organizations must be open to all KU students.  For example, organizations that have membership requirements that exclude specific people may not obtain Gold status.  (The most common groups that fall into this category are sororities, fraternities, exclusive religious organizations and exclusive political groups.)

Applying for Maroon or Gold Status

  1. Once registered for fifteen (15) academic weeks, a Registered student organization may apply for SGA Maroon Status by completing an online Status Change Application Form in KUnited during the Open Status Change Period.   Once registered for fifteen (15) academic weeks, a Maroon student organization may apply for Gold Status by completing an online Status Change Application Form in KUnited during the Open Status Change Period. This form will require the completion of an organization Constitution.  The constitution may be uploaded as an attachment, or the organization may use the Constitution Builder that is in KUnited as a part of the Status Change Application form.  The Open Status Change Period will be from the first day of class until 4:30 on the 5th calendar Friday of the semester.  There is an Open Status Change Period each fall and spring semester.
  2. This online form and constitution is reviewed by the SGB Parliamentarian to be reviewed by the SGB Constitutions/Policy Committee. This review period will take place from the 6th calendar Monday of the semester until the 7th Monday of the semester.   During this review there will be direct communication with the submitter and the SGB Parliamentarian.  This communication will include a list of clear and concise required changes and adjustments in order for the organization to achieve the desired status.  Once all revisions are completed, the SGB Constitutions/Policy Committee will recommend to the Student Government Board that SGA Maroon Status be approved.
  3. On the 7th Tuesday of the semester, at the SGB meeting, groups status changes will be approved, to be active as of the date of their application for status change.
  4. Then the 7th Tuesday until the 7th Friday the student organization will be notified of their status by SGB via email.  Any groups achieving Gold Status will receive a budget packet that they are eligible to submit by the budget packet deadline.  These groups will have the opportunity to meet with a representative of the Budget and Finance Committee to become aware of the budget packet expectations.
