20 Tips to Avoid Being a Crime Victim

  1. Remember, safety in numbers: walk with a friend.
  2. Travel on well-lit, heavily-used paths.
  3. Know your surroundings.
  4. Vary your routine: go out by different routes at different times.
  5. Lock your doors and windows.
  6. Engrave your personal belongings.
  7. Place identifiable marks on and in textbooks.
  8. Stay in the laundry room while doing laundry.
  9. Mark your laundry with permanent ink.
  10. Avoid excessive use of alcohol, and do not use drugs.
  11. Register bikes with Public Safety.
  12. Lock your bike with a good quality lock.
  13. Report suspicious activity.
  14. Report all crimes; you may not be the only victim.
  15. Keep access numbers for money access cards separate from the cards themselves.
  16. Limit phone conversations with unknown callers.
  17. If you are the victim of an obscene phone call, hang up immediately.
