CONNECTIONS Frequently Asked Questions
What is CONNECTIONS?
CONNECTIONS is the new student orientation program at Kutztown University. Orientation programs are offered for first-time freshman, transfer students, as well as parents.
When are the freshman orientation programs?
There are a series of one-day programs offered in the month of June for freshman who are attending the fall semester. Students select the date that best suits their schedule. There is also a one day orientation in January for those beginning in the spring semester.
Will I receive my class schedule during Freshman CONNECTIONS Orientation?
What is an ARD?
ARD stands for Advance Registration Deposit. This is the $200 deposit that a student sends to KU after being accepted to indicate their intention to enroll. Information about the CONNECTIONS program will be sent to students after the ARD has been paid.
What should I bring to CONNECTIONS?
Bring your enthusiasm and be prepared to learn. Orientation is about getting ready for your experience at KU. Lunch is provided during Freshman CONNECTIONS. Dress comfortably and wear comfortable walking shoes as you may be required to travel to various locations around campus. The weather may fluctuate and classrooms are air-conditioned, but you may feel warmer or cooler depending on the number of people and your personal temperature preference. You may also consider wearing sunscreen for the times when you are outdoors. We discourage bringing personal items to orientation and are not responsible for lost items. If you misplace something while at CONNECTIONS Orientation, you can contact the Office of Public Safety at (610) 683-4002.
What if I need special accommodations for persons with disabilities, injuries or other circumstances requiring accommodations?
The university is committed to achieving equal educational opportunity and participation for persons with disabilities, injuries, or other circumstances requiring accommodations. Will I be taking any placements as part of CONNECTIONS Orientation?
Kutztown University requires two Placement assessments prior to coming to orientation. The first is a Math Placement Assessment (ALEKS). The Math Placement Assessment takes approximately 90 minutes to complete. All students are strongly encouraged to spend several hours using the ALEKS Prep and Learning Module. Even if you have achieved placement in your desired course, time spent in ALEKS will better prepare you for your upcoming course and ultimately lead to better grades.Click on this link to take the Math Placement Assessment. Your scores will be recorded by the Department of Mathematics.
The second placement exam is the Foreign Language Placement. Unlike the Math Placement, students should bring a copy of these results with them to their CONNECTIONS orientation date. The Department of Modern Language Studies utilizes a web-based placement (CAPE) in French, German, and Spanish: The test can be accessed from any Internet-capable computer and takes about 20 minutes. It provides immediate feedback regarding the appropriate level of language placement. Students who place into level 012 or higher, and then complete the appropriate course at KU with a grade of C or better (on first attempt; repeated courses do not count), will receive credit for courses in the same language at the lower levels, up to a maximum of 9 additional credits. Transfer credit does not count in this area.
Before beginning the actual test, students complete an online questionnaire regarding previous language experience. In the event that there would be a serious discrepancy between the test’s recommended level and a student’s perception of his/her abilities, a qualified advisor from the Department of Modern Language Studies will use the answers to the questionnaire as an aid in determining an appropriate placement. Students who wish to schedule an appointment with an advisor from Modern Language Studies, please call the department at 610-683-4427.
