CONNECTIONS is the new student orientation program at Kutztown University. For first-year students, a series of 15, one-day programs are held during June. Transfer student CONNECTIONS is a separate one-day program offered throughout the year based on the term of enrollment.

When are the programs?

There are a series of 15, one-day programs offered in the month of June for freshmen. Students select the date that best suits their schedule. Don't wait too long to register.

Will I receive my class schedule during CONNECTIONS?

     Yes.

What is an ARD?

ARD stands for Advance Registration Deposit. This is the $200 deposit that a student sends to KU after being accepted to indicate their intention to enroll. Information about the CONNECTIONS program will be sent to students after the ARD has been received and processed.

What should I bring to CONNECTIONS?

Lunch is provided during CONNECTIONS. Dress comfortably and wear comfortable walking shoes as you will be required to travel to various locations across campus. The weather may fluctuate and classrooms are air-conditioned, but may feel warmer or cooler depending on the number of people and your personal temperature preference. You may also consider wearing sunscreen for the times when you are outdoors. We discourage bringing personal items to orientation and are not responsible for lost items. If you misplace something while at CONNECTIONS Orientation, you can contact the Office of Public Safety at (610) 683-4002.

What if I need special accommodations?

The university is committed to achieving equal educational opportunity and participation for persons with disabilities, injuries, or other circumstances requiring accommodations. This commitment extends to the administration of programs, activities and employment practices. It is university policy to adhere to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. If you require an accommodation, we ask that you contact Kutztown University's  Disability Services Offices no later than 2 weeks prior to your orientation date to arrange for these services. For additional help or answers to questions please contact the Disability Services Office of Kutztown University.

It is very important that you arrive to orientation on time to complete all aspects of the event. If you feel that there is any possibility that you may be late in arriving due to the distance you are traveling, please plan to stay in the area the night before. A list of area hotels for family members can be found here.

Do families interact with freshmen during the CONNECTIONS event in June?

Freshman CONNECTIONS and Family/Parent CONNECTIONS are two separate programs. Students and families will separate after check-in. They will meet at the end of the day.

Where can I park during CONNECTIONS?

Should I take a foreign language placement exam prior to attending CONNECTIONS?

YES and bring a copy of the results with you to your CONNECTIONS Orientation date! The Department of Modern Language Studies utilizes a web-based placement exam (CAPE) in French, German, and Spanish: The test can be accessed from any Internet-capable computer, takes only about 20 minutes, and provides immediate feedback regarding the appropriate level of language placement. The placement test allows for the granting of credits for levels below the level at which students place.  Students who place into level 012 or higher, and then complete the appropriate course at KU with a grade of C or better (on first attempt; repeated courses do not count), will receive credit for courses in the same language at the lower levels, up to a maximum of 9 additional credits.  Transfer credit does not count in this area.

Before beginning the actual test, students complete an online questionnaire regarding previous language experience.  In the event that there would be a serious discrepancy between the test’s recommended level and a student’s perception of his/her abilities, a qualified advisor from the Department of Modern Language Studies will use the answers to the questionnaire as an aid in determining an appropriate placement.  Students who wish to schedule an appointment with an advisor from Modern Language Studies, please call the department at 610-683-4427.

HOW DO I TAKE THE EXAM?

When will I receive my housing and roommate assignments if I plan to enroll in the fall semester?

The Office of Housing, Residence Life and Dining Services will complete roommate assignments in mid-July if you have signed up for on-campus housing prior to this time. We encourage students to contact their roommate as soon as they receive this information.

Is my orientation experience complete once I attend June CONNECTIONS?

No.  There is a mandatory program called AlchoholEdu which all new students must take prior to enrollment. Students will receive an email notification through their Kutztown University email account with information about this course.  Additionally, students are required to attend Fall CONNECTIONS which takes place on Sunday, August 23, 2015. Students will be sent a postcard reminder in late July with more detailed information about this event. A commuter orientation will take place on Friday, August 21st. Students will be sent information about this event.

What is Family CONNECTIONS?

Family CONNECTIONS is an optional one day program in June designed to assist family members of incoming freshmen with the transition topics. Additional information is provided about university services and procedures. Please note that students do not attend with their parents. There is a fee of $25 per person to attend which covers the cost of materials and lunch. Students can sign their parents up through their MyKU account. Advance payment is required.

I am a transfer student, can I bring a guest to CONNECTIONS?

Family members can attend orientation. Programming is provided for parents and families while course advisement takes place. Students should plan on staying the entire time during transfer orientation.  A typical day runs from 8:15 AM to 3:00 PM.
