The Administrative Council is the third part of the Tripartite Shared Governance System at KU. The membership of this body consists of the heads of various divisions and important bodies and union presidents representing faculty, staff, and students. Its job is to consider policies and procedures that affect everyone at the university. For example, parking rules and regulations would be channeled through this body before being sent to the University President for approval. Smoking rules and regulations would also fall under the jurisdiction of this body. However, this body would not make recommendations to the University President about academic policies since they fall under the purview of Governance Committees that report to the University Senate.
One becomes a member of the Administrative Council by virtue of being a campus leader heading some portion of the administration or by being a union leader or president of the University Senate or Chair of Chairnet, the organization of Academic Department Chairs, or by being the President of the Student Government Board. As you can see in the Governance Structure organizational chart, the Calendar Committee, the Campus Beautification Committee, the Presidential Commission of Human Diversity with the Commission on the Status of Minorities and the Commission on the Status of Women, the University Safety Council, and the Traffic Bureau all report to the Administrative Council. One may be appointed to serve on one of those reporting bodies, but membership in the Council itself is established by title.
The Administrative Council considers policies and procedures that affect everyone at the university and anyone who comes on campus. Examples of such policies would be those for parking and smoking. The Council does not consider academic policies since they fall under the purview of bodies that report to the University Senate. Administrative Council typically meets on the third Friday of each month that classes are in session.
